* there are more fast food restaurants than any other kind of eatery. pretty much every corner has one. i never did see a deli or health food store.
* there are also a lot of mid-class greasy places like applebees, chilis and outback steakhouse.
* people there love to drive big, beefy pick up trucks with huge lift kits and enormous tires. the men who live there must have really small penises.
* there are also a ton of strip clubs and adult stores all over the area, not just in a specific section of town. but really seedly looking places.
* there are dive bars aplenty. really seedy dive bars.
* oddly, there are also tons of tanning salons. i guess when the sun doesn't shine for one or two days, people freak out.
* gas is a lot cheaper there than in nor cal. guess that's good for all the beefy pick up trucks.
* strip malls are everywhere. so are big box stores like walmart and target, which are usually in the strip malls.
now, don't get me wrong. i really do like arizona. i've been a bunch of times, though for the most part it has been to northern arizona where the landscape and people a bit different. i've hiked the grand canyon, been thru tons of ghost towns, spent time in the painted desert and the peterified forest. i enjoy the weather in the spring when it's not so hot as in the summer. i love the colors of the landscapes and sunsets and all the fantastic turquoise jewlery. i'm just not too fond of the super seediness that is the phoenix area. and yes, i do realize there are nice parts, like northern scottsdale. i'm just talking about the area as a whole. and it's my opinion, so there!

But for the most part we didn't like it. It was sure different from Florida, but not in a good way. It has very little sense of community or history, and it seems like everyone who lives there is from somewhere else. The first year was a novelty and we enjoyed it, but after that we were ready to leave. If we'd moved someplace further north, like Sedona or Flagstaff, I imagine we'd have stayed longer.
gypsy, i totally agree. i really like sedona and flagstaff. the northern part of the state is really pretty. and we did stay in a nice part of scottsdale, but getting thru phoenix and the surrounding areas were soo seedy. even in the middle of the day.
Haq haq haq.......
